David Naill and Co was founded in 1976 by Leslie Cowell. Formally apprenticed to H. Starck of London. It was not long before the Naill chanter was winning prizes at the highest level, demand was growing very fast, and Leslie was joined in 1980 by his son Martin. Over the last twenty three years, and using the experience gained whilst in the employment of such firms as Boosey and Hawkes, and Ruddall Carte etc. D Naill and Co have made every effort to modernise the way in which bagpipes, and Chanters are made.Consistency in production when one is dealing with higher levels of output require up to date methods

Over the years David Naill and Co has grown, and we now employ fourteen staff with varied skills, from silver smiths to hand engravers, engineers to the best hand turners. Our policy at David Naill and company is to produce everything "in house" so as to ensure the very finest quality craftmanship. Our polypenco chanters, now included with many of our sets are all guarenteed made in house, Our silver work is also produced in house. Everything from the cheapest starter practice chanter to the most expensive set of bagpipes are produced within our workshops.

Our policy is NOT to farm work out to engineering companies with little or no experience of musical instrument making as so often is the case. This ensures that the customer gets what they want a genuine D Naill and Company product, and not some standardised item simply stamped with a makers name. With this in mind I would ask you to join me in a short tour of our company.

Our premises extend to over 2500sq ft of workshop and storage space. Allowing us to keep in stock at all times a large amount of African blackwood. Thus insuring the stability of the finnished product. All pipes are turned by hand. More modern machinery methods are only used where their application enhances the finished product. Many of the more mundane tasks such as the initial roughing and boring are now completed on automatic lathes. The use of more modern methods allows us to work to finer tolerances resulting in greater consistancy in the finished product. This is most notable in the accuracy of our bores.

A large amount of workshop space is taken up with the production of non-wooden products these include: Polypenco pipe chanters, A large range of polypenco practice chanters, Imitation ivory projecting mounts, ferrules, and caps, Nickel ferrules, caps, and slides, Silver ferrules, slides, caps, mouthpieces, soles, shields, and projecting mounts, Polypenco mouthpieces, Universal water traps, Universal valves, Reed protectors, Poly blow sticks, Electronic Pipes, Bagpipe covers, Small pipe bellows.

All Imitation projecting mounts, ferrules, and ring caps are made from non-discolouring art ivory, precision turned prior to fitting. In addition to this our D Naill and co hands on policy extends to the manufacture of all our own tooling, thus enabling us to monitor and scrutinise production at all stages.
